Teacher Workday (student holiday) Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009

Math:  We checked our study guide and separated into groups to focus on the types of problems each student needed to work on the most.  Students also studied and quizzed each other on keeper notes #12-13, corrected their study guides and finished and received feedback on the 10 review questions from yesterday.

HW:  Keeper #12-19 is due tomorrow.  Call someone or come in at 8:50 to finish your notes from my binder or a friend in homeroom.  Make sure your table of contents is updated and meaningful color is added to key vocabulary and key words in the definitions or the steps of the processes.

Fraction Test is tomorrow!!  Look back in chapter 4 and 5, study your keeper notes on fractions, rework problems in your workbook or on your study guide, work more story problems in your book, workbook or online.  Make sure you know the steps to add and subtract, how to borrow, and the steps to muliply and divide and what a rational number is and what the fraction bar means.

Picture Day is Tomorrow!   This picture is for the yearbook.  All students will have their pictures taken during connections.  If you want to order pictures, bring back the form and your check.

This week is Red Ribbon Week (Say No to drugs and alcohol). You may wear crazy or mismatched socks to say "Sock it to drugs!"

Math:  We reviewed adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions and mixed numbers. Please turn in p.285 if you were absent for make-up or if you were here yesterday for late work tomorrow.  We will finish the 10 problems we were working on in class tomorrow.

HW:  Finish your study guide. Study your keeper notes #12- 19 (reread them, memorize the steps), review chapter 4 and 5 and word problems, Test is Thursday, keeper #12-19 is due Thursday, please bring in box tops, those who volunteered need to bring in their ingredients for our Halloween Trail Mix by Friday.

Picture Day is Wednesday!!!

Math:  We checked HP p. 42 and reviewed how to get a reciprocal of a fraction (flip the fraction) or a mixed number (get an improper fraction first and then flip) and how to divide fractions and mixed numbers (look at keeper notes #19).

Students played tic tac toe while reviewing how to add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions and mixed  numbers.  (review of chapter 5)

We began p. 285 in our textbook.  This is a wonderful way to prepare for our test on Thursday.

HW:  Finish chapter test "review" on p. 285 in your textbook #2-40 EVEN problems only, Keeper #12-19 is due on Thursday, Fraction Test on Thursday (look over chapters 4 and 5), STUDY SESSION TOMORROW AT 8:20 am (the only one before the test), Please bring in box tops by Friday.

Picture Day for the yearbook is October 28th.

Advisement day is Monday.

Math:  We checked and discussed our worksheet:  "Abracadbra"  about dividing fractions and mixed numbers for a classwork grade.Please use this sheet to help you rework problems to prepare for next week's test.

We discussed key words and how problems are set up to add, subtract, multiply or divide before completing station work.  In each station students had to read a story problem and decide whether to add, subtract, multiply or divide and then complete the process using the correct fraction rules.

Students could choose 10 out of the 17 stations to complete.

HW: Dividing Fractions HP p. 42, our fraction test has been moved to Thursday, Oct. 29th, Keeper notes #12-19 are due on Oct. 29th, find out from your parent if he/she would like to donate a box of plain cheerios, a bag of mm's, a bag of pretzels, OR a bag of candy corn for our Halloween Trail mix for next Friday.  Sign ups will be Monday.

Math:  After our MMM (timed math fact activity), students had to explain to their partner how to work 5 different problems involving dividing fractions, whole numbers and/or mixed numbers from chapter 5, lesson 9.  We used our new song to help us explain the steps as our partner worked each problem.

Make sure that you only do ONE step at a time.  Many students want to change their mixed numbers into improper fractions and keep, change, flip (multiply by the reciprocal)  all in the same step and then problems arise. 

Students began their classwork "Abracadbra".

HW:  Finish "Abracadbra" worksheet.  SHOW ALL WORK ON A SEPARATE SHEET OF NOTEBOOK PAPER.  PUT ALL ANSWERS BACK ON THE WORKSHEET AND FIGURE OUT THE CODE.   Fraction Test will be next Wednesday.

If you can donate paper towels or disinfecting wipes for our math class, i would greaty appreciate today.

Math:   We checked HP p. 41 on Multiplying mixed numbers. 

Today we learned how to find a reciprocal of a fraction, mixed number and whole number.  Change mixed numbers and whole numbers into improper fractions first and then flip the numerator and the denominator.  This was a necessary skill in dividing fractions and mixed numbers.  Then using our keeper notes we tried dividng fractions from Chapter 5, lesson 9 p. 272.

We continue practicing division tomorrow. 

HW:  Unit 3 Fraction Test is next Wednesday, Oct. 28th.  Keeper #12-19 will be due on that day.  (You can help yourself begin studying by memorizing the processes in your keeper notes and trying word problems from Chapter 5. )

Please bring back your orange cover sheet by Oct. 21st with a parent signature that your report card has been delivered to your parent (if you have not already done so).

Early Release day tomorrow.  Dismissal is 2:15.  All students will follow their regular schedule with shorten classes.  Lunch will be earlier due to the shorten classes.

Picture Retake is next Wednesday, Oct. 28th.  Everyone will get their picture taken since the pictures are for the yearbook.  Please bring your order form with your check if you would like to purchase pictures on that day.

Math:  We learned a multiplication fraction song with movements to help us remember the steps to multiply.  We reviewed the steps and discussed the difference between the process to add/subtract:  common denominators, borrowing, adding or subtracting numerators, keeping denominators and simplifying; and the process to multiply:  change every number into fraction form, try to cross reduce, multiply the numerators, multiply the denominators, simplify your answer.

We played Kaboom (game for 3 or 4) to practice multiplying fractions, whole numbers and mixed numbers.

We copied keeper #19 on Dividing fractions to get ready for tomorrow.

Math:  We reviewed ordering fractions and I returned and answered questions about last Thursday's quiz.  If you have more questions, please come to tomorrow's study session or see me any morning from 8:50-9:10.

We practiced multiplying mixed numbers using versatiles to help us self check. We used our keeper notes to guide us.

HW:  None.  Study Session tomorrow at 8:20.  Our Fraction test will be next Wed., Oct. 28th.

Report Cards and other important notices are coming home today.  Please sign and return the orange cover sheet to your child's homeroom teacher by Wed., Oct. 21st.

Early Release Day is October 21st.  Dismissal will be at 2:15 pm.

Picture Retake Day is Oct. 28th. Please return the envelope with your order and check on that day if you want to order pictures.  Everyone will get their picture taken since it is for the yearbook.

Math:  Today we concentrated on multiplying fractions, whole numbers and mixed numbers.  We covered chapter 5, lessons 6,7, and 8.  We saw how multiplying works with fractions and how to follow the following steps listed in keeper #18:  All numbers must be in fraction form, try to cross reduce, multiply the numerators, multiply the denominators, simplify your answer.  We discovered the value of cross reducing to make our numbers smaller so that we could multiply easier.

We practiced using markers and erasers on our desk tops and played MATHO (Math bingo).

HW:  It is time to clean out your binders and folders.  Please take out any papers about graphs (unit 1) and factors and multiples (unit 2).  Paper clip or rubberband them and put them in a folder at home to keep for review in March as we prepare for CRCT.  You should keep any papers regarding fractions (unit 3).

Lane's Homeroom:  Donation Challenge.....If each person can bring $1 tomorrow, we can donate $30 to help a teacher who lost everything at Clarksdale Elementary to replace her boom box to play classical music.  Thanks!

Report Card distribution tomorrow.

Math:  Students completed a MMM timed activity for math facts.

We checked HP p. 37 and reviewed regrouping with subtracting mixed numbers.

Students took their quiz on fractions and then copied keeper notes #18 on Multiplying fractions and mixed numbers.
